Spin glass models are used to physics to explain the way that magnetic materials that initially have spins (generating their magnetis moment) in random directiosn, settle down to have spins aligned over patches or the entire material. They are used as an analogy for subsymbolic machine learning including Bolzmann machines and Hopfield networks.
